Cannabinoid receptors in Rabbits

In the late eighties, a group of scientists came across something interesting – mammals have receptors in their brains that responded to cannabinoids. Cannabinoid compounds naturally exist within rabbits to regulate regular bodily processes, such as sleep, appetite, and mood. Researchers are now testing phytocannabinoids, such as CBD, on small mammals to study the effects. These same CB1 and CB2 receptors attract CBD to stimulate signaling required for a healthy body response.

Is it safe?

CBD oils are new, but most of the research so far has been conducted on small mammals, such as rabbits, so we can be pretty sure the current literature holds true. So far, little to no side effects exist when using the appropriate dosage. It is important to

remember that THC is toxic to rabbits, so make sure you get hemp-based oils void of THC.

It’s widely regarded as safe by veterinarians, but rarely-prescribed because it’s so new. In fact, many vets are bound by law to not recommend it as a medical intervention. CBD should be viewed more like a vitamin or dietary supplement, as part of a holistic approach to animal health. Preventing decline and degradation across your rabbit’s life.

What are the Benefits?

Although CBD is fairly new, it appears to have a variety of health benefits for rabbits. It’s been shown to relieve widespread joint pain and reduce stress levels in even the most anxious of bunnies. It’s also useful to treat seizures, other mood problems, and combat the negative effects of aging.
CBD FOR PAINFUL JOINTS – We all know the obvious signs of pain – limping, lack of mobility, or wincing from being touched. CBD oils can help with all sorts of pains. Cannabinoids within the body target certain pain-modulating receptors and with these receptors, releiving your rabbit’s discomfort by modulating painful signals.
CBD FOR SEIZURES – There is strong evidence of the anti-epileptic effects of CBD. Regular CBD administration lowers the frequency of seizures, and it can also make them less powerful. Research in small mammals similar to rabbits confirms that CBD interacts with neurotransmitters that slow brain activity. Taking CBD can calm your bunny’s seizures and erratic neuronal firing.
CBD FOR ANXIETY AND DEPRESSIVE MOODS – Rabbits are known for their happy, curious personalities. Sometimes, however, they can be overwhelmed by anxiety and depression, just like people. If you suspect that your rabbit may have an issue, always talk to your vet. Ask them about CBD, which assists natural mood regulation. By controlling hormonal balance within a rabbit’s brain, CBD and the endocannabinoid system can help your rabbit respond wto stress, changes in the environment, or just plain loneliness in a positive wahy.
CBD FOR AGING RABBITS – CBD oils is a powerful tool for brain health. By combining healthy, omega-3 fats with cannabidiol, hemp oils provide vital nutrients for healthy neurons. Fats form cellular membranes involved in signal transmission within the brain, and cannabinoids act as antioxidants to fight dangerous inflammation and degradation. CBD oils can maintain memory, learning, and mood as well as the aches and pains associated with aging.

Administering CBD to your rabbit

If you are just giving a small dose of CBD, you can put a few drops on your finger and rub it under their tongue. One of the best ways to give your bun a larger dose is with a Syringe so you can control the dosage.  You can draw up the exact amount you want to give and then stick the tip of the syringe under the rabbits tongue for them to swallow. You can also use a dropper under the tongue, but you need to be careful to control the amount. Adding the proper amount to their food works well for many rabbits.
RESULTS REQUIRE REGULAR USE – To see results, you will need to give your rabbit CBD daily for at least 2 weeks, just like most herbal supplements. The best results can take as long as 2-4 months. Be patient and consistent.
DOSAGES – Adult rabbits will typically require at least 2 drops per day and can have as much as 30 drop to treat more severe issues. Start with small doses twice a day and increase slowly as needed or as directed by your vet.
