Savior Successes

Here are some of the great success stories of rabbits with major injuries that recovered to live happy, fulfilling lives.

Orlagh's Care

Orlagh being a rear splayed legged bunny, doesn’t affect her quality of life, it just means she needs a little extra love and care. Being splayed legged means that her rear legs splay to her sides about 14inches.

Our daily care routine with her is as follows, We clean out her litter tray first thing in the morning. We use a 25×24.5 square tray that is 1.5 inches deep. I have it layered with yoga mats cut to fit the inside of the tray, then we use throw away pee pads over the top. (Orlagh does not chew the pee pads, or I wouldn’t use them). We also clean her litter box before bed to make sure it’s nice clean.

She is no different in her normal day than any other rabbit. She has hay available 24hrs a day, she has her morning salad and pellet treats and is out for most of the day free roaming while we are home. For her safety she is in her pen when we are not home. Because Orlagh doesn’t realize she’s special abled we have to keep a closer eye on her while she is out. She can get stuck under chairs and smaller spaces she doesn’t realize she can’t get in and out of. She can also slide off of different mats or beds and get stuck in awkward positions.

We check her bottom area daily, we make sure that her stomach and bottom area are clean. She gets a butt bath 2 to 3 times per week. There is always two people when she gets her cleaning. My husband holds her over the sink and I use free and clear baby wash to get her clean. I then dry her with a towel, and then the cold setting on the hair dryer. We don’t wet any other area on her. After her bath I use Genta Ved Topical Spray. I use the hair dryer to dry it. It is for areas that she cannot lick. This spray helps keep her skin nice and clean.

On days where we don’t bath her, we use free and clear baby wipes if they are needed. Every two weeks we use Zymox Otic Enzymatic Solution to clean her ears for her. She can’t reach them her splayed legs. We also help with any itches that arise.

Every month I bring Orlagh to our vets office for a sanitary trim, which is a huge help in keeping her clean and her skin nice and healthy. If a splayed legged bun is not treated properly they can have a lot of issues with urine scald, infections and skin irritations.

Orlagh needs to be on soft surfaces, to keep her comfortable and keep her fur and skin healthy. Thankfully she makes everything so easy for us!!!! Special abled buns are truly so deserving of love and homes like any other buns!!!

If you are interested in a special abled rabbit, please make sure you do your homework first, to make sure that you have the time and resources to care for them!!

Bugs is a 6 kilo German Giant. Bugs broke her knee and our vet told us to put her down asap. We have no clue how she broke her knee, I suddenly saw her limping and hopping around (on 3 paws)…
