Buddy’s Foot amputation!!
Howdy, my name is Leya and I am a 21 year old college student currently entering the final year of my respiratory therapy program. I work at a local grocery store to pay for my education and other living expenses. School does consume majority of my time due to difficult coursework and 12 hour clinical days, but fortunately I have performed well in the program and am set to graduate in May of 2027. Finances are tight due to school and time constraints, and so here I am seeking support.

Buddy came into my life when I was around 12 and had no idea what proper care for a bunny looked like. I took it upon myself to learn about a rabbit’s needs and not only provide it to my boy, but also educate the people around me about rabbits. Buddy is possibly the biggest blessing in my life. Just his existence alone is encouragement for me to work hard every day and he reminds me to stay optimistic.

On August 1st, 2026 I noticed Buddy was starting to limp, an attempt to avoid putting weight on his right hind leg. I took him to the emergency vet where they evaluated him and sent us home with pain medication and antibiotics. They said it was likely an abscess and that we would need to follow up. While on pain meds, Buddy was acting like himself again! I was excited that his condition appeared to be improving. When we did our follow up with primary care on Friday (8/14/26), the doctor ordered an X-ray and a lab culture. She determined that Buddy was suffering from a tumor, and that the outside appearance of his foot was not indicative of just how much internal damage this tumor has caused. His foot bones are beginning to fuse together, and he has a bone spur forming. The culture revealed that his infection was resistant to the antibiotics that were prescribed to him at the emergency vet. The vet told me that Buddy would need his foot amputated. It was a very hard pill to swallow. I scheduled the surgery for Thursday (8/20/26) and mulled over what the best course of action in this situation could possibly be. I learned that many bunnies are three-legged and can still live very fulfilling lives. So, while the cost of surgery is a scary prospect, I figure it will be worth the added stress if it means Buddy can get another shot at life. I truly don’t think I could forgive myself if I didn’t at least try. Buddy is eating, drinking, and even still thumps! In spite of all his pain, he still tries to get around. Rabbits are such strong creatures and I truly believe Buddy can persevere if given the opportunity.
